In a career full of unique aviation experiences, flying with the Patriots Jet Team has to rank among the most intense and awe-inspiring projects I’ve ever undertaken. The Patriots are a 6-jet fighter display team composed of some of the most elite military veterans in the world. Their pilots include former Blue Angels and Thunderbirds, two of the most famous aerobatic display teams. The opportunity to work with this elite crew was a rare chance—an opportunity that came after years of aviation projects and a deep desire to push my limits as a content creator.
For those unfamiliar with formation flying, let me give you some perspective. These jets, L-39 Albatros aircraft, fly within just a few feet of each other, traveling at over 400 mph. The slightest miscalculation could lead to catastrophic consequences. During their practice session, I was able to fly in one of these jets, sitting in the same seat that Tom Cruise occupied while filming the iconic air scenes in Top Gun: Maverick.
But this wasn’t just any flight. Over the course of about 15 minutes, we performed a series of maneuvers that included full loops, rolls, and even inverted flying—all while maintaining perfect formation. We pulled up to 8 G's, and believe me when I say it’s a physical and mental challenge like no other. At times, I could barely see due to the intense G-forces pushing down on me. I felt like every inch of my body was being compressed, and yet the adrenaline rush made it one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life.
One of the highlights was the opposing passes, where two jets fly directly at each other at closure speeds exceeding 600 mph. At the last second, they bank away from each other, passing by just a few feet apart. The precision involved in these maneuvers is staggering, and I was left in complete awe of the skill these pilots possess.
But the flying wasn’t just about the adrenaline; it was about understanding the deep coordination and trust that goes into every flight. These pilots are a brotherhood. The Patriots Jet Team practices tirelessly to achieve this level of precision, and I got a glimpse into the camaraderie and work ethic that makes them stand out in the aviation world.
As part of the project, I also recorded podcast episodes with the team, discussing their involvement in major Hollywood films like Top Gun: Maverick and Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning. We explored what it takes to be at the top of the aviation world, and how working on high-budget films brings new challenges even for seasoned military pilots. Stay tuned for when the documentary and podcasts go live—it’s an inside look you won’t want to miss.
